Recap of 2007 Event

On Dec. 5-7, 2007, Markle Foundation convened an executive symposium on personal health records and consumer information services in California on December 5-7, 2007. The event brought together 100 senior executives from commercial PHR companies, national health plans, large delivery systems, employers, consumer organizations, and federal and state officials to talk about how to increase the value and adoption of emerging consumer information platforms.

The meeting addressed three issues:

  1. What will it take to stimulate those who now hold consumer data (doctors, plans, hospitals, pharmacy networks, labs ...) to release it to new consumer information services?
  2. To what degree is the industry prepared to agree to common privacy practices and through what mechanisms?
  3. What payment or reimbursement models are most likely to stimulate PHR adoption by consumers and greater liquidity of information by providers and institutions?

This dynamic event included members of the Health 2.0 community, global internet companies, and representatives of the established health care industry. Informal summaries and comments are available at:

  • How health IT may help us share information quickly without compromising our privacy.
  • Legislative and private sector proposals that would affect how individual Americans access personal health records and other emerging health information technologies.
