Carol Diamond, M.D., M.P.H.
Chair, Steering Group, Connecting for Health


Dr. Carol Diamond is Managing Director of the Markle Foundation's Health Program. The program's goal is to accelerate the rate at which information technology enables consumers and the health system that supports them to improve health and health care.

Previously, Dr. Diamond was president of U.S. Quality Algorithms® (USQA®), Aetna U.S. Healthcare's performance measurement affiliate. At USQA, she led a 400-employee business unit that developed and deployed sophisticated clinical and financial information products and services. She directed several strategic initiatives while at Aetna, including twice leading the company's overall effort to develop a long-term strategy for information technology deployment.

Before assuming that position, Dr. Diamond was USQA's Chief Healthcare Information Officer. In this role she led the development of a clinical and statistical methodology aimed at measuring and improving health care quality. Additionally, she headed the company's Health Services Research unit, which collaborated with academic medical centers around the country.

Prior to joining USQA, Dr. Diamond worked as a consultant for several organizations including Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, where she helped develop and evaluate private sector and academic programs in chronic disease management.

Dr. Diamond received her medical degree from the dual B.A./M.D. program at the Medical School of the State University of New York at Brooklyn. Her postgraduate training included an internship in internal medicine and residency training in anesthesiology at New York University. She completed residency training in occupational and environmental medicine-a field of preventive medicine-and earned a master's degree in public health from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Rutgers University. Dr. Diamond has published regularly on health care quality measurement.

Dr. Diamond currently sits on the Public Advisory Board of the American Academy of Family Physicians and on the planning committee of the National Academy of Science's Science Technology and Economic Policy Board.
